Since 2011 PEN has been implementing a book development project in collaboration with the Canadian Organization for Development through Education (CODE).
CODE and PEN SL have been working together to improve the quality of education in Sierra Leone. This work has included training and working with local writers and illustrators to create locally written, illustrated, and published books. 20 titles had been published over the years.
The overall goal of Reading Sierra Leone is to engage readers with culturally relevant books that they can read for pleasure and understanding – books they can interpret, relate to, and use to inform and enrich their schooling and their lives. The intent is to create skilled readers and thoughtful engaged citizens.
